LIONSROCK soon a new home for the Gaenserndorf lions
January 2004. After vegetating for many years at the edge of its survival, the Safari Park Gaenserndorf, Austria, closes its gates forever. The animals became a “living bankrupt's estate”. Some animals can be quickly placed somewhere else or can be sold, the large lion herd, however, remained in Gaenserndorf. In November 2004, FOUR PAWS decides to intervene and offers to buy the lions in order to protect them from death. Due to our expertise within the field of animal welfare, the Gaenserndorf lions were awarded to us. An search for a new, appropriate accommodation begins.
Despite extensive research it was impossible to immediately find a new area in the original home of big cats for our protégés. The animals are still care for by us in the old area of the safari park until today. This was the situation until a few weeks ago – now finally, after two years, the search ended with a success.
The FOUR PAWS wild animals experts found an ideal area in South Africa, which can provide the Gaenserndorf lions and other wild animals with a new home. We took over an already existing area in the eastern Free State of South Africa in the vicinity of the city Bethlehem and also took over the animals that were living there. This beautiful place was named LIONSROCK – an area which is best suited to accommodate our Gaenserndorf lions.
