Work horses in Turkey - FOUR PAWS finished pilot project successfully
Efficient and professional help for oppressed horses
In the Turkish city Konya in western Anatolian highland, many Roma families need work horses for their everyday life. These animals are used for transport such as trips to the market and for the collecting of garbage. Some of the horses are also used for transporting people in the city with its 1.2 Million inhabitants.
The health conditions of the horses are very poor. The animals have wounds on their extremities, withers and back. These injuries are caused by the inadequate saddlery and the insufficient protection and maintenance of the workhorses. Another problem is the wrong, flawed or old horse shoeing, which causes orthopaedic problems. Furthermore the feeding of the workhorses is poor, most of the effected animals have vitamin deficiencies and painful indigestion. Our team was on location from September 2005 till November 2006 to help the effected horses and to inform their owners about the necessity for better treatment of the animals.
