Pictures from six different EU - Countries

Below are some photographs taken by our undercover investigators in six different EU-countries. These show the circumstances under which the rabbits live until they have to be slaughtered for their meat.

Germany

Alt Alt

Our investigator saw mutilated ears in this “rabbit battery cage”

Up to four animals are housed in each of these narrow cages

Alt Alt

The ammonia gas from the heaps of faeces below the cages can  irritate the rabbits' eyes

The rabbits are sometimes forced to sit next to their dead  cage companions

Alt Alt

Like many others this rabbit did not survive the cruel living conditions

The cages from below where there are piles of stinking faeces

A badly injured rabbit

A typical rabbit cage shows how the space for movement is severely limited

An example of cannibalism. A dominant rabbit is seen attacking a weaker rabbit's ear.

A huge number rabbits like this one die of illnesses, cannibalism and injuries caused by bad husbandry

Italy

 Alt  Alt
The interior of a typical Italian commercial rabbit farm. One out of the ten thousand commercial rabbit farms in Italy. Italy is the world's second largest rabbit meat supplier and consumer. China is the largest.
 Alt  Alt
The rabbits end up in the supermarket. The sale of whole rabbits is rare. In southern countries the rabbits are kept in dark tunnels which become very hot in the sun.

Austria

 Alt  Alt
The meat-rabbits for mass farming are special breeds like for example this ZIKA albino rabbit. The goal is a high meat output which comprimises the animals' health.
The rabbits with their soft paws have to stand their whole life on rusty wires.
 Alt  Alt
The mass farming makes many rabbits succeptible to to disease so drugs are used to avoid outbrakes of illnesses and infections.
In this rabbit farm bright light shines all night, this encourages the animals are to put on weight (meat) quickly.
 Alt  Alt
In this austrian rabbit farm animals live in cages on many levels.
Rabbit meat in Austria. The packaging does not say anything about how the animal was kept and if it suffered on a battery farm

Slovakia

Alt Alt
This rabbit farm fattens 100,000 rabbits. Slovakia is the main supplier for the austrian market. These mother-rabbits live in extremely narrow single cages. They are kept isolated due to their aggressive behaviour, caused by  due to the bad husbandry.
.
Alt Alt
The rabbits are kept in these cages for 90 days. 90 days of fear, stress and un-natural behaviour. Every day there are casualties in mass rabbit farms. The victims of factory farming.

Czech Republic

Alt Alt
Dozens of animals had infected eyes in the farm. Some animals were already completely blind.
The bodies of thousands of rabbits at the slaughterhouse.
Alt Alt
The poisonous ammonia gas has made this rabbit blind. This is likely to be very painful for the animal.
This meat rabbit did not survive.
Alt Alt
This isolated mother has a back injury. To the right of the cage there is a torn off paw from the last time the rabbits were taken to the slaughterhouse.
Final destination slaughterhouse. Only thousands of bloody ears are remaining, which are used for animal food.
Alt Alt
Tens of thousands of rabbits are caged in the Czech Republic. In front of the farm there is a big container where the pile of dead rabbits is growing daily.

Hungary

Alt Alt
After 90 days the rabbits are fully grown and nearing slaughter- movement is very limited Up to nine animals live very tightly together in the cages
Alt Alt
This picture shows a rabbit which has been canibalized. Animals like this one end up as animal feed.
In this hungarian factory farm 150,000 rabbits are held in cages.
Alt Alt
The animals cannot move or turn and are defenseless against aggressive fellow rabbits.
Instead of soil and grass the rabbits live on two floors of wire cages.
