Stray Animal Care A better life for more than 8.000 animals
In the course of 2011, FOUR PAWS has neutered, vaccinated and supplied medical care to 8292 dogs and cats worldwide. Romania, where a new law now threatens the lives of tens of thousands animals living on the streets, leads the field with 5122 treatments, followed by Lithuania with 1437 and Bulgaria with 1200. These results prove yet again that SAC is an effective tool in curbing the ever increasing stray animal population in Eastern Europe - and the only humane method available. It is the only method that will ultimately lead to a decrease in the number of strays if it is backed up by a EU-wide policy of responsible ownership and finds the necessary support on a local level.
Many a mayor and local politician has seen the advantage of this approach and taken the required steps to abandon the killing of stray animals, which has long been scientifically proven to be entirely ineffective. Further projects were conducted in Slovakia and Jordan, while the annual cooperation with the Blue Cross of India was continued. The sustainable aid provided by FOUR PAWS veterinarians does not only provide more safety for the dogs and cats, it also aims at mending often chronic ailings and injuries. SAC was initially introduced in the late 1990s and has grown ever since.
