Dogs For People team attends rescue dog camp in Arieseni
The staff of renowned FOUR PAWS therapy dog project Dogs For People has participated in the annual k9 training camp in Arieseni, Romania. Former stray dogs Cretu, Maya, Alma, Marin, Codrut and Spritz were amongst the canine delegation. These six dogs belong to the core group working with challenged youths in Bucharest. The training camp, hosted by Romania’s official association for rescue dogs (ARCS), was aimed at further improving the skills of both animals and dog handlers working in this field.
Each dog attended the event in the presence of its handler – most of whom have worked for FOUR PAWS for many years. Nonetheless, meeting colleagues of related fields is an opportunity for all parties involved. This also goes for the dogs: Maya, Alma and Spritz, for instance, are relatively new to the project and can learn from the old-timer Cretu, the decorated Codrut and the immensely talented Marin – as well as from the rescue dogs brought in by other organizations.
Expertise on the training pitch A great deal of exercises, motivational efforts and Search And Rescue scenarios were all on the agenda of this well-known convention, which was also attended by international experts representing the associations of their countries and contributing much experience in working with dogs. For the animals it was a rich experience of improving and demonstrating the amazing things they are capable of.
Broadening the scope of the assignment Dogs For People has not only contributed immensely to the improving public image of stray dogs in Romania, but has established itself as a leading showcase of animal-assisted therapy. Furthermore, FOUR PAWS dogs have already been included in emergency rescue operations in the aftermath of floods and collapsed buildings.
