Journey to Freedom - Day 28
01 September 2009 Exactly 4 weeks into the Journey to Freedom for these 9 elephants and the small yet highly dedicated team of FOUR PAWS and ZNSPCA who have been working tirelessly each day to provide care to these animals. Today is officially Spring Day, the start of a new season and hopefully a season of new beginnings for the elephants that we have grown to love so much.
PORTRAIT OF AN ELEPHANT
NAME: MARY AGE: 20 (estimated) SEX: FEMALE HISTORY: Mary is already a mother of one calf, John and has matriarch qualities. Having been separated from her son for the last 9 months, she has been exposed to high levels of stress and her matriarch instincts have withdrawn. As the stress has been reduced over the last period and she has been reunited with John, she is beginning to reestablish her leadership qualities. We believe Mary to be pregnant and her mammary glands are increasing in size. We will try to obtain urine or feces samples in order to be able to do a pregnancy test, although due to the larger volumes of food she is eating we are quite sure that this is the case. Our dream is that Mary will be able to give birth to her calf in the wild, where they belong.
