Temporary Care: Panthera Africa Big Cat Sanctuary Lions

Meet Panthera Africa’s kings, lions Neptune, Chaka and Oliver

After devastating wildfires swept through the Overberg area in the Western Cape, Panthera Africa Big Cat Sanctuary faced an unimaginable challenge: protecting its beloved animals from danger. Recognising the urgency, Panthera Africa, an ethical sanctuary for captive-bred big cats, reached out to FOUR PAWS to provide temporary refuge for five lions at the LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary in Bethlehem.

Among those rescued are the magnificent king lions Chaka, Oliver and Neptune, who were transported to LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary, where they are receiving ongoing specialised care and support as they recover and adapt to their new environment. They have since been released into their adaptation enclosures, where they are being closely monitored and cared for by the dedicated and compassionate animal caretaker team.

Meet Chaka
Once kept as a family pet in a Johannesburg home, Chaka’s story took a turn when authorities intervened due to the lack of a permit for an indigenous animal. After spending three months at Johannesburg Zoo, it became clear he needed a permanent solution. Panthera Africa Big Cat Sanctuary stepped in, and on 11 November 2017, Chaka arrived at what would become his forever home. Confident and charming, Chaka truly lives up to his reputation as a real Prince Charming.

Meet Oliver
A white lion with a gentle spirit, Oliver’s life story is one of survival, resilience and second chances. As a cub, he was exposed to human interaction at a facility that allowed public contact. At just 10 months old, he was returned to his owners and placed in an enclosure with nine other lions, where they struggled to compete for food and receive proper care. He was severely impacted by the harsh conditions and lack of attention. When Panthera Africa was founded, Cathrine and Lizaene were determined to reunite with Oliver. After a long and challenging journey, Oliver was brought to his forever home at Panthera Africa, where he could finally live out his days in comfort and peace.

Meet Neptune
Affectionately known as Skapie, meaning “little lamb,” Neptune earned his nickname as a cub with his snowy-white coat and sweet bleating sounds. Today, he is known as “the King” with his majestic presence and magnificent beauty. Neptune has captured hearts all over the world, and his loud roars literally make your heart skip a beat. He is an incredibly wise soul who tells stories without making a sound.
