National Women’s Day 2025: Leading with Compassion
From boardroom strategy to sanctuary care, the women of FOUR PAWS lead with compassion, strength, and vision for a kinder world
Cape Town, 04 August 2025 – As South Africa prepares to mark National Women’s Day on 9 August, global animal welfare organisation FOUR PAWS proudly celebrates all the extraordinary women who are making a lasting impact in the fight to end animal cruelty. From strategic leadership, hands-on veterinary care, and daily operations, the women at FOUR PAWS South Africa and LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary continue to lead with compassion, expertise, and unwavering dedication.
At the helm of FOUR PAWS South Africa is Fiona Miles, a formidable advocate for animal welfare. As Director, Miles has played a pivotal role in driving forward national advocacy efforts, public education, and rescue missions that have transformed countless animal lives. “Every day, I am inspired by the resilience and spirit of the animals we rescue. It's a privilege to be their voice and advocate for a world where they are treated with respect, empathy, and understanding,” says Miles.
Under her leadership, the South African office has become a regional powerhouse, championing humane and sustainable solutions for farm, companion, and wild animals. Miles continues to push for systemic change, highlighting the importance of community involvement and ethical treatment of animals across society. “Our mission emphasises community involvement in animal welfare, empowering local communities to care for and protect their animals, aiming to create lasting change,” she adds.
Meanwhile, in the heart of the Free State, LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary is a testament to the courage and care of women who protect some of the world’s most vulnerable big cats. The sanctuary, which is home to over 100 rescued lions, tigers, leopards, and other big cats, is managed by Hildegard Pirker, a passionate animal welfare expert originally from Austria. With decades of experience in animal caretaking and management, Pirker has contributed to building LIONSROCK into a world-class sanctuary where big cats rescued from zoos, circuses, and private ownership find peace, safety, and space to roam.
Supporting the sanctuary’s residents with medical care is Dr Christine Steyrer, the on-site veterinarian, whose deep knowledge and compassionate approach ensure the lifelong health and well-being of the big cats. Her work is crucial in enabling the animals to heal physically and emotionally from past trauma.
These women are more than colleagues – they are guardians, advocates, and changemakers. On National Women’s Day, FOUR PAWS South Africa salutes not only their achievements but also recognises the broader significance of diverse teams in animal welfare.
FOUR PAWS South Africa invites all South Africans to join in celebrating these incredible women and to stand in solidarity with those working tirelessly for a kinder, more compassionate world.
