Rescue Lioness Savannah
From loss to a new beginning
Savannah, a beautiful lioness born in 2006, endured more than her fair share of heartbreak throughout her life.
As a cub, she and her brother were rescued from a breeding farm in South Africa by CROW (Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife) in KwaZulu-Natal. Their rescue offered hope for a brighter future and a second chance at life.
As they grew older, the young lions were relocated to a reserve to eventually return them to the wild. Tragically, their journey took a devastating turn when the resident pride fatally attacked Savannah’s brother. With her safety at risk, it became clear that she could no longer remain there.
In April 2009, Savannah found a permanent home at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary. Arriving shortly after the loss of her sibling, she was understandably vulnerable. To help her settle in, she was introduced to Jazz, a calm and gentle lion, through neighbouring enclosures. The bond between them formed quickly and naturally, and before long, they were sharing both space and companionship.
For many years, Savannah and Jazz enjoyed a close and comforting partnership. Sadly, in October 2021, Jazz was humanely euthanised due to severe arthritis. Although Savannah lost her beloved companion, she continued to thrive in the peaceful and secure environment of LIONSROCK.
Her remarkable resilience served as a powerful reminder of why every animal deserves protection, compassion, and a safe place to call home, and why sanctuaries like LIONSROCK are so important.
Sadly, Savannah passed away in February 2026. She leaves behind a legacy of strength, survival, and hope, and she will always be remembered by those who cared for her.
