Arriving at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary in 2020, Ruby and TJ’s story is a heartwarming tale of resilience and the difference that compassion and a sanctuary can make. Their lives, once marked by hardship, turned around thanks to the efforts of FOUR PAWS and other organisations. 

Ruby's journey began in 2006 at a canned hunting facility, where she was born. She was later rented to the Rhino and Lion Reserve for cub petting. However, TJ was born at the Rhino and Lion Reserve and was removed from his mother to be used for cub petting and, eventually, breeding. Their paths crossed when a volunteer at the reserve troubled by the unethical treatment of animals, decided to step in. To save Ruby and TJ, she purchased them and relocated them to a lion facility near Harrismith, Free State. 

In 2020, the owner of the farm where Ruby and TJ were housed became ill, and the property was sold. Seeking a more secure and permanent solution, their caretaker reached out to LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary. In July 2020, Ruby and TJ found a new forever home, designed to provide a safe, species-appropriate environment for big cats. 

Ruby adapted well to her new surroundings, embracing the freedom and care provided. Tragically, TJ's time at LIONSROCK was cut short. In June 2021, he was euthanized due to advanced lymphoma, a heartbreaking end to his journey. 

Ruby’s story continues to unfold at LIONSROCK, where she thrives in the wide-open spaces and receives the care she deserves.
