Secure Your Legacy During National Wills Week

An annual campaign encouraging the public to have their Wills drafted for free by participating legal practitioners

4.9.2025

Now in its 17th year, National Wills Week, which runs from 15 to 19 September 2025, is an annual campaign organised by the Law Society of South Africa (LLSA), during which participating attorney firms nationwide will offer free services to draft basic Wills.

Why is having a Will so important?

A Will is more than just a legal document — it is a vital step in making sure your final wishes are honoured. It enables you to:

  • Decide how your assets and property are distributed
  • Appoint an executor you trust to carry out your wishes
  • Nominate guardians for your children under 18
  • Leave meaningful gifts to causes close to your heart, like animal welfare

Without a valid Will, your estate is handled according to the Intestate Succession Act, which may not align with your intentions. This can lead to delays, additional costs, and disputes among family members. It may also prevent your chosen beneficiaries, such as beloved charities, from receiving the support you intended to give.

The value of professional guidance

The LSSA strongly recommends that you have your Will drafted by a qualified attorney. Attorneys have the expertise to ensure your Will is both legally valid and tailored to your unique needs, while also advising you on any potential legal complexities.

Don't leave it to chance

Dying without a Will means losing control over who inherits your assets. It also increases the risk that sentimental items or valuable possessions could go to individuals you may not have intended to benefit. Worse still, organisations that depend on public support, like animal welfare NGOs, could be excluded altogether.

By preparing a valid Will, you not only protect your family and assets but also leave a legacy that reflects your values.

Leave a legacy of compassion

If you choose to name FOUR PAWS as a beneficiary in your Will, you will help ensure a better future for animals in need. Your legacy gift, no matter the size, can help end animal suffering and support vital rescue, advocacy, and care programmes.
