Rescue Lion Simba
From war-torn Mosul to peace at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary
Born in 2014 amidst the chaos of war in Iraq, Simba the lion began his life in the Montazah Al-Morour Zoo, located in the eastern part of Mosul. As conflict engulfed the region, the zoo became a forgotten casualty. Of the 40 animals once held there, most perished—either from starvation, bombings, or escaping through damaged enclosures.
When the FOUR PAWS rescue team first entered the devastated zoo in February 2017, only two animals had survived: Lula the bear and Simba the lion. Emaciated and traumatized, both animals were in urgent need of care.
After several months of rehabilitation in Jordan, Simba was declared fit for travel. On 26 February 2018, he was relocated to his permanent home at LIONSROCK, where he found safety, space, and in time — companionship in Andi.
Their bond was a symbol of hope and healing. Despite their tragic beginnings, both lions found comfort in each other’s presence.
Sadly, Simba passed away in March 2025, leaving behind a legacy of resilience. His life was a testament to the power of rescue and the importance of sanctuary.
