Rescue Lioness Simona
From hotel captivity to a new life at LIONSROCK
Simona, a lioness born in 2006, has a remarkable rescue story that reflects both the harsh reality of wildlife exploitation and the hope that comes with a second chance at life.
In March 2010, Simona was found living in unsuitable conditions at a hotel in the town of Melnik in Bulgaria. At only about four years old, she had already spent part of her life in captivity, kept not for conservation or proper care, but most likely as an attraction for visitors. When the Bulgarian authorities became aware of her situation, they acted swiftly and confiscated her to ensure her safety and well-being.
After her rescue, Simona was temporarily taken to Sofia Zoo, which kindly provided her with a safe place to stay while long-term plans were made for her future. Just a few months later, on 29 October 2010, she was transported to her permanent home at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary in South Africa.
Today, Simona is thriving in a calm and natural environment where she has space, safety and dignity. Her story stands as a powerful reminder of why continued efforts to end the exploitation of wild animals are so important, and of what can be achieved when authorities and welfare organisations work together to give animals a better life.
