Rescue Lioness Simona
From hotel captivity to a new life at LIONSROCK
Simona, a lioness born in 2006, has a remarkable rescue story that highlights both the cruelty of wildlife exploitation and the hope that comes with second chances.
In March 2010, Simona was discovered living in unsuitable conditions at a hotel in the town of Melnik, Bulgaria. At around four years old, she had spent part of her young life in captivity—kept not for conservation or care, but likely as an attraction for visitors. With the help of the Bulgarian authorities, her situation came to light, and she was swiftly confiscated to ensure her safety and well-being.
Following her rescue, Simona was temporarily moved to the Sofia Zoo, which kindly offered her refuge while long-term arrangements were made. Just a few months later, on 29 October 2010, Simona arrived at her forever home: LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary in South Africa.
Now thriving in a peaceful, species-appropriate environment, Simona enjoys the space, safety, and dignity every lion deserves. Her story is a reminder of the importance of ongoing efforts to end the exploitation of wild animals—and the incredible transformations that become possible when organizations and authorities work together for change.
