Rescue Lions Marin, Tarhon and Lidia
A journey to freedom
At LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary, Marin, a lion with a tumultuous past, now roams carefree in his species-appropriate enclosure. His journey from cruel captivity in Romania to the vast landscapes of LIONSROCK is due to the unwavering efforts of FOUR PAWS and the sanctuary’s commitment to providing rescued big cats with a life of dignity.
Background Story
Marin's story beings in Baia Mare Zoo, Romania, where he was born alongside his brother Tharon in 2003. Their parents', Petrica and Lavinia, and sister Lidia were originally born in Bucharest to be trained for the Romanian state circus Globus, but due to a tragic incident involving Petrica attacking his trainer, the three lions were transferred to Baia Mare Zoo in 2002.
The Closing of Baia Mare Zoo
After failing to meet the EU Zoo Directive standards, Baia Mare Zoo closed, leaving lions in limbo. After negotiating tirelessly with authorities, FOUR PAWS was finally allowed to remove the group from the zoo.
While waiting for their transfer to LIONSROCK, the lions were moved to a former farm that was rebuilt to shelter them. During this period, FOUR PAWS with the support of a dedicated local vet, took care of the lion family. Unfortunately, during this time, Lidia suffered a serve eye injury, and it has to be removed. While in recovery she was separated from the group but could not be reintroduced due to fighting between the males.
Finally, home
After years of uncertainty, Marin, Tharon and Lidia were finally relocated to LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary in 2015
Goodbyes
Sadly, Marin’s sister Lidia was euthanised in February 2022, and his brother Tarhon followed in April 2024.
Today, Marin continues to thrive at LIONSROCK Big Cat Sanctuary. A forever home where he experiences carefree living.
